I
I wore your presence
like a sweater,
if only to keep out the cold
that came when you walked into my life.
II
I trod lightly
on your scars,
listened
to your heart,
burned myself
with your flame,
and let all of it
consume me,
and feed me,
and take me,
and make me
your own.
III
Waking up
was falling down
from a high I never knew I’ve reached.
Where would I be now
if I had never
found my feet
and used them
to walk away
from you?
Marie
To answer your rhetorical question, Iβd bet youβd be teetering on living insanityβ¦
Self preservation is never an easy choice for those suffering by a dishonorable lover.
Very nicely crafted.

What a beautiful, sensitive poem. β€
It is enriched with all the emotions one can personally understand of love. But, the depression has set itself, because love is a high, that when absent, we are left alone without wings.
And, still… we believe we possess clarity. We believe we possess function. But, we merely want to be beautiful. Perfect, in our imperfections. Like the most bitter medicine, has been tasted sweetly. Though, now it's just the bitterness, seen in such vanity to still be alluring. π
How often we see warmth, even when it's never felt. Phantoms are almost everywhere…

This hit me hard. Like others here, I feel I’ve lived this poem. The first and last stanza say it all. So very true. We do need to use whatever strength we have left to walk away, especially when we have nothing left to give to a falling and perhaps mutually-destructive relationship. Amazing and empowering write.

p.s. and what I meant by mutually-destructive is that the one who attempts to do the healing — all the actions in your also-amazing second stanza – becomes the enabler of the other’s abusive behaviour. Truly awesome three-part poem. Kudos, gal. π π π
